The Ace Hotel here in NYC is pretty cool. The lobby bar is a great place for a drink (though, usually very crowded) and the rooms are modern and different. If you're looking to do New York on the cheap, book their "Starving Artist Package": Book a super cheap bunk bed room and get free ramen noodles from the mini-bar on your first nights stay.
