Required Reading: Winter 2012

WINTER-READING

While without power during the after effects of Frankenstorm, I got a lot of reading (by candlelight...not great) done and realized I hadn’t posted a required reading list since this summer! During the colder months, there’s nothing I like better than staring at my unused yoga ball and reading a good book. Here’s what I’ll be reading this Winter.

1. The Art of Fielding – This book and I got through Hurricane Sandy, one page at a time.

2. Gone Girl – All my friends rave about this book, and I trust them implicitly.

3. Rules of Civility - A recent favorite, this book is beautifully written and I couldn't put it down!

4. The Bucolic Plague - A story about a gay couple who buy a farm in Upstate New York and have no clue what do with it. Hilarious and inspiring.

5. The Chaperone - I'm judging this one based solely on the cover. I'm sold.

If you're a diehard Wes Anderson fan, like myself, these book covers will look familiar to you. If you haven't had a chance to read Accounting For Everything by Henry Sherman, may I suggest it? One of my faves. Images via Miss Moss.

What The Shuck!

shucked-cover-image

It's no secret that I love oysters. Which is why this book is right up my alley. Erin Byers gave up her primo job as the Boston editor of DailyCandy.com to spend a year working on the Island Creek oyster farm.

To say I admire Erin would be an understatement. This chick is living the dream! That's not to say her year at Island Creek was a walk in the park (intense physical labor in harsh Boston winters...ouch.) but if her blog is any indication, the world is her oyster! (har har har...) Can't wait to get my hands on this book. It's the ultimate beach read!

P.S. If you find yourself in Boston, don't miss the Island Creek Oyster Company. A restaurant so good, I'd be willing to brave a Boston winter to live close by.

Required Reading - Fall 2011

One of my greatest pleasures in life, is reading a great book right before bed. Preferably, the sheets will be white and cripsy and there will be rain outside. The window will be open and there will be a lavender scented candle flickering nearby (but not near any curtains, of course).

I keep a big stack next to my bed, and when one is done, it's on to the next. Here's what's on my required list this Fall.

reading

1. The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
2. Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann
3. The Botany of Desire by Michael Pollan
4. Blood, Butter and Bones by Gabrielle Hamilton
5. I Was Told There'd Be Cake by Sloane Crosley

What's on your required reading list?
